The new digs [24 Jan 2005|02:26pm]
The new Journal is up and running. You'll find it at http://www.absath.com

If the page doesn't work for you yet, it just means the DNS for you ISP hasn't updated. Give it a day or two.

Eventually I'll figure out how to set up a syndication feed for LJ, or if someone knows how to do it, go for it and I'll post the info here.

Edit: Apparently if you go here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/absathcad/ and add it to your friends list, you'll be able to see my journal entries in your friends list.

It doesn't look like it posts the whole journal entry, or the images, but it does supply you with a quick link directly to the new posts. Should still provide pretty easy access from your friends list.

This journal is dead [22 Jan 2005|08:20pm]
This journal, for all intents and purposes, is dead.

Back when I turned my Live Journal into my sketchdump, I promised myself it was a temporary solution until I could set up a more permanant journal/art gallery. It's time that I moved this little shindig over to an environment that is entirely under my control, rather than working within the limitations of a preprogrammed environment. Even one with as many customization options as LiveJournal.

I have just finished setting up a new journal system. In the near future I will begin work on integrating an image gallery/archiving system, for easy browsing of all of my sketches.

I will still post new sketches with my journal updates, as I did here. However with this new system I will have more control over over who sees what.

Once the new Journal is up and running, I will create a syndicated LJ account for it. This means that you will be able to add it to your friends list as if it were a livejournal account, and still see the sketches and posts in your friends list.

I will post the URL to the new journal here as soon as I feel it is ready.

I love... desk [18 Jan 2005|03:27pm]
[ mood | Inspired ]

Heh, I didn't even realize I was still dating these 2004. Going to take me at least a month to start remembering that it's 2005.

I'm pretty happy with today's sketch. I haven't posted one for you guys in a while, so I thought I'd go the little extra distance today and make it a nice one.

I was in a very weird funk yesterday. I wasn't motivated to do anything. Couldn't work, couldn't even play World of Warcraft. I have no idea why. The only thing that held my interest, and even then not for very long, was Resident Evil 4 (I'll get into that in a moment). It was just one of those days where you don't want to do anything. I was just totally out of it.

Today, however, I've woken up with so much motivation and inspiration it's ridiculous. And I know exactly why. I've started seeing/dating someone recently, and I had this really weird day yesterday, but then at the end of the day, last night before bed, I got to talk to her for a while, and she totally snapped me out of it. Not on purpose, either. She's not even aware that she did it. It's stuff like this that makes me realize how special she is to me. She's absolutely wonderful, and I hope that I can make her as happy as she makes me.

Let's see... work stuff. The Lilah shirts are being printed, and should be up for sale in the store pretty soon. Most of the designs will now be offered in Baby Doll tees, which should please some of the ladies that have been emailing requests for them.

I've got a little pile of stuff that I need to do, and today I feel like I have the energy to just plow through it all. I don't know how realistic that is, but it won't hurt to try. Mostly comics stuff. My comic, the CoH comic, and a comic I promised to do for my friend Josh for his Anthology project.

The new front fenders for my car have finally shipped, and will arrive on Friday. One step closer to having all of the parts for the major overhaul in the spring. If anyone asks about my car I'm going to ingore you, because I've talked about it at length in the past.

Haven't played WoW in 4 days now. I don't feel like I've lost interest in the game at all. I still love it. I just haven't been feeling like playing it right now. The first couple of days I didn't play it because I was spending time with someone who is way more important than WoW, but then it was just business and generic apathy. I'm sure this weekend I'll jump back into it.

Resident Evil 4 is really very cool. There's a lot of great action, fun end bosses, and so many little nuances that I can't even list them all. Like being able to shoot a zombie in the leg as he's running toward you, and he'll grab his thigh and stumble to the ground, where you can safely empty a clip into his head. Or the "instant-kill" moves that add realism and danger to the game, such as when a chainsaw wielding zombie gets too close. You don't just suffer minor lacerations. It's a fucking chainsaw. That sonuvabitch cuts right through your neck, removing your head from your body, no matter how much health you have left. It's a thing of beauty. Disturbing beauty, but beauty nonetheless.

I robbed this from my buddy Xero's LJ. Thought it was nifty.

Make a list of 10 statements about yourself:
* 4 of the 10 statements must be lies.
* Post your list and have people guess which four are lies!

Bonita Applebaum, you gotta put me on [12 Jan 2005|04:25pm]
[ mood | Content ]

Blaaaargh!

It's amazing how something as simple as starting off your morning (well, MY morning... which is around noon for the rest of you) with someone very special can make the rest of your day that much brighter, despite the cold gray skies, and all of the snow. Thank you for coming over after class =)

On the agenda today is more of the same old. Continue working on the Winter-een-mas storyline, continue working on the Winter-een-mas website, organize other work, try not to worry think about work TOO far ahead, lest I get overwhelmed with all that needs to get done.

I recorded an interview for Fanboy Radio yesterday, which aired today. I'll have to make it a point to download the show and hear how bad I sounded.

Oh... right. I also need to finish the design for the Lilah t-shirt today. My t-shirt guy is anxious to get all of the designs printed in baby-doll tees, so I need to get that to him today.

Right now, super top priority, however, is to find food. I am very hungry. I think I will have to venture out into the cold, and forage in the vicinity of the grocery store. Tim eats. Food Good. Beer Good. Beer Foamy!

See?

I'm back [11 Jan 2005|01:56pm]
[ mood | happy ]

Just a few scribbles today.

Well, I'm back. I didn't end up going to Texas this weekend, as I mentioned on the front page of the website. It's a long story, and I'm not going to get into it, so don't bother asking.

Winter-een-mas has gotten huge, and I didn't even realize it. News sites are doing articles, people I know are being wished a Happy Winter-een-mas while out in public by people they've never met. People are celebrating all around the world, and it's still difficult for be to believe that I started all of this.

I now run a guild on Feathermoon. It's not too bad. We're focusing on slow, steady growth and a very friendly atmosphere, as opposed to being an uber guild where half the people don't know the other half, etc. I play WoW here and there, when I have time. It's such a fun game, and it helps me relax and take my mind off of work.

That's all you get for today. The rest goes into a private entry.

Gone fishin' [07 Jan 2005|05:08pm]
[ mood | nervous ]

In about 10 hours I'm going to be on a plane headed to San Antonio, Texas. You know, the really big state right next to Mexico? I'm going away for a few days to hang out with a friend, get some rest, get my head on straight, maybe see some dumb tourist stuff like the Alamo, which I only just found out was in San Antonio.

Obviously there will be no journal posts or sketches until next week sometime. My plane gets in Tuesday night, but I won't get home until 1-2am. Wednesday is the earliest I will be back in an official manner.

Catch you guys next week.

A game about games about games about... [06 Jan 2005|07:57pm]
[ mood | flirty ]

Apparently my mention of a CAD video game in the works has caused a bit of buzz, as if I hadn't dropped the idea a dozen times before. Last night I had the conference call with the vice president of the company interested in working on the game, so I thought I'd clarify a few things for you.

First of all, stop worrying about the game right now. Developing a video game takes a long time, so you won't see or hear anything definite about it for at LEAST 7-8 months. This is not the kind of project I'm going to give a behind-the-scenes progress report on. We'll start promoting it shortly before it comes out, but that's it.

I am also not going to indulge any details yet, because we have not finalized the deal yet. I have another call in two weeks where we'll hammer out the concept document.

I will be working very closely with the company during the design and art phases. We (the company and myself) are more than aware that we cannot put out a half-assed game about a comic whose primary demographic is gamers. Nor do I personally have any desire to stamp my name and intellectual property onto a product that does not meet my standards. The game will remain true to the comic right down to its core, because I wouldn't allow anything else.

And trust me, if I can continue to come up with story arcs time and time again that please you, I think you can trust that I can come up with a plot for a video game.

That said, I will throw you a couple of bones. These are things that I want to see for the game, and the company I'll be working with agrees. I want the game to be 2D animated, so that it remains as close to my art style and the look of the comic as possible, and I want it to be a classic side-scrolling platformer with a storyline, a la metroid or contra.

And that's all you get until later this year.

And in more exciting news, my Night Elf Druid has hit 225 alchemy skill, and has learned to turn iron into gold and mithril into truesilver. And he was happy.

Another life [04 Jan 2005|04:52pm]
[ mood | calm ]

Spent all of yesterday evening doing nothing but building and coding the Winter-een-mas website. It's nothing spectacular, but I managed to get www.wintereenmas.com up and running. I still have a bunch of work to do, but at least the site is up.

I have a lot of high hopes for 2005, and I know that it's going to be a busy one. I have a conference call tomorrow evening with a company that is looking to produce a Ctrl+Alt+Del video game.

I had planned to start working on Volume Two in January, but I can see that with Winter-een-mas getting as large as it is, it just won't happen. I've bumped work on the new book back into February.

I got a call from Brian Clevinger today. Looks like we're a definite go for MegaCon down in Orlando, Florida, so I'll be making my travel arrangements this week. As soon as I have definite details I'll make the announcement on the website.

Fresh start [02 Jan 2005|12:49pm]
[ mood | determined ]

One of the benefits of having a modicum of artistic skill is that it allows me to express myself on paper when I need to. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, and it can act as sort of a therapy for me, to place what is going on inside onto a piece of paper on the outside, so that I can look at it with a different perspective. This sketch is for myself and for one other person.

I self-destructed on New Years Eve. A lot of things caught up with me all at once and I detonated. There are no excuses. Reasons are practically meaningless. I hurt a lot of people close to me, up to and including myself. The only thing left is a determination to face what I've done, and institute a drastic change in my life, no matter how painful and scary it may be.

I just got this picture of my best friend Toby and I that was taken on Christmas. I thought it turned out pretty well.

Deconstruction [28 Dec 2004|04:01pm]
[ mood | Screwed. Hehe... ]

No sketches today. Matt and I are building a new kitchen table, and we have to try and be done before Briana and Britanny get back on Thursday. So I've got to get as much done as possible while Matt is at work.

Here's the mess I've made of our kitchen

This is me being a dork in my shop glasses.

And finally, a semi-serious picture. I just really like black and white photographs.

Fingers crossed we'll have this done by the weekend, so I can take pictures to show you.

Felled [27 Dec 2004|01:13pm]
[ mood | Thinking of her ]

Here we go. Getting back into the swing of things.

Well, I'm back from Cape Cod, back to the routine. The holidays are over, so no more excuses to slack off. Winter-een-mas is just around the bend, which means it's time to kick it into overdrive for me.

I had a good time this weekend. I got to see a lot of family that I haven't seen since last Christmas. My parents just had a brand new outdoor hot tub installed, so I got to try that out a bit on Christmas eve. My best friend Toby stopped by for a bit on Saturday. I got to spend a bit of time with Matt, Briana and Britanny before I left for the Cape. So all in all I got to spend at least a little bit of time with all of the people I love this holiday.

I got some really great gifts. I'm sure by now most of you have seen the Xbot statue, which sits proudly next to me on my desk. I got a boatload of books and DVD's, including some of my favorite older movies like Serpico and The Falcon and the Snowman. I got hardcover copies of my favorite books, The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, because I've read my paperbacks into utter ruin. I got a lot trades... the Marvel 1602 trade collection is the one I'm looking forward to reading the most. I also got The Watchers trade paperback, which I've heard tell was a good storyline. I also got a lot of alcohol for Christmas. My parents gave me a shotglass checkers set, and a bottle of Black Cherry and Vanilla vodka. My sister gave me a bunch of alcohol and some condoms. Toby, my best friend, gave me a polish cheese babka from New York. If you've never had babka, you are seriously missing out. Toby is from Brooklyn originally, and every time I would go over his house, and they had been back to NY recently, they had babka. And I coveted it. It's delicious. I've never seen it anywhere except New York.

This past week I've been in a bit of a weird place. My head and my heart have been twisted around something that's been pre-occupying most of my thoughts. I'm really trying to make a distinction between my pre-existing patterns, my instincts, and what is truly best for all involved. It's difficult, but I think I'm doing fairly well with it so far. We'll see how long it lasts. I'm really eager to change some of my ways, when it comes to relationships, but I'm weighed down by serious doubts that it's possible, and suspicions that I'll never be able to change.

Holidays [17 Dec 2004|01:57pm]
[ mood | rushed ]

Sketches may be pretty sparse this coming week, with the holiday rush and everything. I've got a lot of work in front of me with Christmas, and the Winter-een-mas right afterwards. I have to finish a few christmas gifts, figure out a few more, and wrap them all in time to go up to Cape Cod next weekend. I also need to get all of this week's comics finished, and the Winter-een-mas shirt designs finalized so we can start taking pre-orders as soon as possible. Top it all off with a full day of Lord of the Rings on Saturday, and a full day of World of Warcraft on Sunday, and the next week is looking pretty full.

Bizeh [15 Dec 2004|01:58pm]
Just a quick messy sketch today. Got a lot of things to do.

Need to get on the ball with finishing and wrapping christmas presents. Somehow it snuck up on me and christmas is next week.

The World of Warcraft servers were having issues all day yesterday, so I sat down and watched I, Robot. I have to say, I was impressed. I didn't expect it to be very good, even after Brian Carroll told me it was great. He was right. The movie was very well done, and very entertaining.

Clothes for the nekkid [14 Dec 2004|01:37pm]

I've started working on the designs for the two Winter-een-mas shirts I want to make available for the holiday. One will be a Winter-een-mas logo on the front, with the "A Winter-een-mas Story" poem on the back, and the other will have the WEMas logo on the back, with Ethan on the front as the King of Winter-een-mas. They'll both be dated 2005, and only available for a short while via pre-order. My plan is to do new shirts each year, with the dates and year on it. Sort of a collectable, I guess.

I think I've got the World of Warcraft thing under control now. I lost it hardcore over the weekend, but I'm back to work now on my regular schedule, and playing evenings only. My druid on the RP server hit 18 last night, and my Priest is L16 on the PvP server. I went ahead and actually joined a guild of some CAD readers with my Priest, a few of whom I had actually met, coincidentally. At a LAN down near Houston I attended last winter, I signed a few posters for them. They're pretty cool guys.

I'll be going out to pick up RoTK today, and this Saturday Matt and I are putting everything aside for a nice 12+ hour marathon. I'm fairly certain I'll be restless as hell at the end of that. Maybe I can counter it with lots and lots of food and lethargy.

Risa, if you read this hun, I'll try and give you a call tonight. Been really busy and such. Hope school and such is going well!

Running out of time [11 Dec 2004|03:48pm]

So I was talking to Britanny yesterday, and she was on her way home for the weekend. She called me about twenty minutes later and I could tell right away that she was upset. Turns out her car was vandalized. During the night someone smashed both of her side-view mirriors and kicked in one of her headlights. It was raining out, and the police couldn't do much more than file a report.

She drove over here and I did the best I could reattaching the driver's side mirror so that she could get home. You can get by without a passenger side mirror, but it's illegal to drive without the driver's side one. The rain made it particularly difficult because no tape would stick to the car. I managed to rig it so that at least the mirror stayed on and she could put her window up. I felt so bad that it had happened, and that there wasn't anything more than I could do.

She made it home alright, took the night off of work, and the car will be fixed soon. Fingers crossed she has comprehensive and her insurance will cover it. It's just a real shitty thing to have happen with no explanation or reason. People just suck sometimes.

World of Warcraft is taking over my life. I don't think I was this addicted even in the beta.

No more double-clutching [10 Dec 2004|01:38pm]

So I got my car back a couple of days ago. Got a new clutch in there and a custom machined flywheel, and the difference is... undescribeable. It's like a brand new car. The clutch is so smooth, it grabs right in the middle, and shifting is so easy. Unfortunately because the clutch release point has changed, it means that I have to learn to drive my car again for the second time in as many months. But I'm very happy with the results.

The flop, the turn, the river [08 Dec 2004|02:39pm]

I should be getting my car back tonight or tomorrow morning. It has been decided that there a few faulty springs in the existing clutch kit, causing it to provide less pressure than was needed, which was making some of the shifts difficult, or off-time. We're replacing it with a brand new clutch kit, and I get to take the old one and go after ACT to try and get my money back. Fun.

ROTK: Extended Edition comes out next week, which I'm psyched about. I've only seen Two Towers and RotK once, so we'll probably run a little marathon where we watch all three.

I also want to see Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Aviator. Leonardo DiCaprio is a really good actor, and I think he'll do the Howard Hughes part justice. As tempted as I would be to head out and see it on Christmas day, I'll be up on Cape Cod, so I may have to wait until later that week.

I'm going to try and blow through all of my work today so I can get some WoW in tonight. I was up until 4am last night because I fell in with a really good group and I was having a lot of fun.
